Central Mining Institute’s ECO PATROL

In response to the needs reported both by the residents and government units, the Central Mining Institute introduced an innovative, original solution in the scope of air quality measurement and monitoring. A mobile laboratory called GIG Eco Patrol enables conducting air quality measurements of immission and emission of pollutants.

The GIG Eco Patrol test set consists of an electric car equipped with a weather station and measuring platforms, as well as control and measurement equipment installed on a drone. The platform installed under the drone uses a solution developed by GIG for laser air pollution concentration meters. The measurements include the following parameters: PM1, PM 2,5, PM10 suspended particulate matter concentrations and carbon monoxide (CO). The collected data are then compiled in the form of a report on the research and analyses carried out together with their interpretation and visualization. The platform allows mapping of smog threat zones and mapping using a precise GPS device. Smog threat maps are a valuable source of information for local authorities, decision makers and residents of monitored areas. Municipalities in which the zones with a high risk of low emission have been diagnosed can effectively plan and implement remedial actions.

GIG Eco Patrol is supported by a stationary system of a long-term stationary dust monitoring system and data from portable dust meters. The GIG portable dust meters are smartphone compatible and can be connected to the Internet thanks to an application available on the website. The device acts as an individual protection against low emission.

All measurements are validated based on reference and equivalent methods. They are carried out in accredited laboratories and involve sampling in the field or from a specific emitter and laboratory analyses concerning the occurrence of gaseous combustion products (including hydrogen chloride or formaldehyde, which indicate the burning of, for example, plastic waste).

GIG Eco Patrol is an innovative idea in terms of introduced technical solutions and building a public awareness of the sources and range of low emissions. The stationary devices and the mobile laboratory provide a stream of data that ensure the density of the measurement grid in a given area and thus allows for detailed indication of the source and quantity of pollutant emissions and the assessment of the effectiveness of the remedial actions taken. In the future, widely available and specialized information systems on smog threats will be crated based on GIG’s measurement platform.
