  • Diagnosis of technical condition of buildings and engineering structures using the method of assessing the technical condition of foundation piles and evaluation of the technical condition of building anchors together with identification of structure discontinuities, faults and technological errors using modal and wavelet analysis.

KD-4 Department of Explosion-Proof Protection Experimental Mine “BARBARA” conducts complex activities in the field of evaluation of products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Within the Department there is a Certification Body – Products Certification Team of the Experimental Mine “BARBARA”. The Product Certification Team conducts activities based on the requirements of the “ATEX” Directive and the International Electrotechnical Commission IECEx.
An important element of the assessment is the research conducted by the Laboratory of Explosion-Proof Systems and Protection and Explosimetry which operates within the structure of the Department. The Laboratory is accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation in the scope of research covered in the harmonised standards for the “ATEX” Directive. Employees of the Explosion-Proof Protection Department also carry out scientific research in this area of expertise.
 
Certification in accordance with the requirements of the ATEX Directive (Directive 2014/34 /EU, formerly Directive 94/9/EC) for the following product types:

DSC Q2000 Differential Scanning Calorimeter

Determination of the heat transfer associated with the phase change of materials as a function of time and temperature. Qualitative and quantitative determination of heat absorbed or released in the phase transformation processes of materials, such as melting, oxidation or other heat-related changes. Temperature range: -90C ÷ 550C.

Scope of activities:

  • Diagnosis of organizational, competency and social determinants of safety in work environment - especially in high-risk enterprises (own research tools verified by the PBS project);
  • Diagnosis of safety culture state in enterprise (own research tools - verified in coal and copper mining);
  • Safety culture improving in enterprise using its own method, which effectiveness has been proven in mining company;

Measurement and testing of asbestos fiber concentrations in the air, including in the vicinity of buildings and objects from which asbestos is removed, and in confined spaces, based on results from an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope.

The KD-4.1 Explosion-Proof Protection Assessment Team operates within the structure of the KD-4, Department of Explosion-Proof Protection. It deals with wide-range explosion safety by providing the following services:

  • Expertise concerning:
    • Comprehensive assessment of explosion protection of industrial equipment and installations;
    • Evaluating the correctness of selection of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive areas;
    • Assessment of the correctness of the use of protective systems.
  • Receipts of explosion-proof installations;
  • Execution of crash reports, identification of the explosion cause;
  • Assessment of the ability of repair factories to repair explosion-proof equipment.

The KD-4.2 Laboratory of Explosion-Proof Systems and Protection and Explosimetry operates in the structure of the KD-4 Department of Explosion-Proof Protection. The Laboratory is accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA), number AB005, in the scope of testing covered by harmonized standards for the "ATEX" Directive.
The Laboratory also conducts non-accredited testing in which it can use explosive mixtures of gases and vapours of flammable liquids including oxygen-enriched mixtures.

Infrared spectrometer with FT-IR transformation.
  • Measurement of infrared spectra in the infrared spectral range: distant 50-400 cm-1, center 400-4000 cm-1 and close to 4000-14000 cm-1;
  • Quantitative measurements by transmission method of solid samples in pellets KBr or HDPE and liquid samples in a removable liquid cuvette;
  • Rapid powder sample measurements in the midrange IR filter;
  • Fast measurements of liquid, solid and powder samples in a high pressure ATR in the range of 50-400 cm-1, center 400-4000 Cm-1 infrared;
  • Measure infrared spectra in the near infrared range with the sphere integrating with the InGaAs detector;
  • Measurement of DRIFT powder samples during their heating in a high temperature reaction chamber at controlled temperature from room temperature to 900°C in vacuum or atmospheric gas up to approximately 750°C;
  • Measurement of gas samples in central infrared 4000 - 400 cm-1 in a 0.75 liter gas cuvette with varying optical path lengths of 1.5 m to 8 m and using a DTGS detector or high-sensitivity MCT-A detector (within 600 cm-1);
  • Interpretation of infrared spectra, identification of substances and functional groups;
  • Statistical analysis and classification of spectra in the TQ Analyst program.

The main directions of the current activity result from tradition and experience of the Department of Material Engineering in the field of research on new special- purpose polymer materials of special purpose and on determining their mechanical and combustible properties. Product testing for certification and conformity assessment, as well as issuing expert's opinions remain an important element of servicing and research potential of the Department. The Department of Material Engineering has at their disposal the experienced staff, and research equipment of the latest generation. Thanks to many years of experience of personnel in the field of material engineering, we are able to cooperate in the development of producing, processing and polymer recycling determination of polymer properties. The department has a possibility of identification of polymers and chemical composition of polymer mixture.

The complete system of the dosimetry of the ionizing radiation in the industry (mining, energy production etc.) as well as in medical units.
  • Measurements of doses and dose rates of ionizing radiation:
    • Roentgen (X) and gamma (γ) radiation;
    • Alpha (α) and beta (β) radiation;

Measurements of concentartion of radionuclides with the use of high resolution gamma spectrometry, liquid scintillation spectrometry (LSC) and alpha spectrometry (U-238, U-235, Ra-226, Ra-228, Th-228, Rn-222 Pb-210, Po-210, K-40, Cs-137, Cs-134, I-131, Am-241, Co-60, Sr-90, H-3, gross alfa and gross beta, others) in following types of samples:
  • drinking water samples, mineral and healing waters and other aqueous samples (+ estimation of the total indicative dose caused by drinking water consumption);

We have accreditation of Polish Centre of Accreditation for measurements we performe. Our methods for measurements of drinking water samples in terms of standards have an approval of Regional Health and Safety Inspectorate.

  • Measurements of radon in air (outdoors, in dwellings, at underground sites);
  • Radon exhalation rate from the ground.

The Department of Material Engineering has experienced staff as well as measuring and research equipment of the latest generation. The rich research and development equipment of the latest generation allow for:

  • Testing of non-metallic materials and polymer materials (1-15);
  • Comprehensive testing of plastic pipes;
  • Comprehensive testing of combustibility of materials and products made of non-metallic materials;
  • Comprehensive testing of material properties and assessments of utility values of polymer materials, conveyor belts and other non-metallic materials;
  • Development of new polymer materials with unique properties such as slow burning and antistatic properties for mining and other industrial applications;
  • Production and testing of biomaterials, polymer membranes and polymer composites with significant high mechanical strength;
  • Developing of recycling technology for polymer materials.

The Department of Material Engineering has at their disposal the experienced staff, and research equipment of the latest generation providing services in the field of polymer properties determination such as as mechanical rheological properties and the degree of flammability. 

The inspection of sealed radioactive sources, containing radionuclides, is provided by the inspector with the Radiation Protection certificate.

Scope of services:
  • Thermal insulation tests of walls of buildings, structures;
  • Investigation of thermal state of district heating pipelines;
  • Investigation of the thermal state of industrial waste dumping sites, especially coal mines and landfills;

Thermal analysis: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis. Measurement of heat flow and mass changes associated with phase transformation and / or reactions in the test samples. The obtained information includes endo- and exothermic transformations not related to the mass loss process (e.g. melting and crystallization) and those related to the mass loss process (decomposition of the sample). Thermogravimetric pressure analyzer Rubotherm GmbH. Measurements of mass changes in the sample depending on the heating rate, temperature and pressure in an inert atmosphere or in the presence of a wide range of gaseous reagents.
